I am more than a little bit obsessed with tapas and would honestly be a happy if every meal I ate for the rest of time was in the form of tapas. It probably boils down to the fact that I am 1. indecisive and 2. in love with tasting a little bit of everything. These two things totally worked in my favour when we popped into Vivante for an early dinner.
We were pretty excited to visit Vivante – for their food, but also because this is where it all began, some 14 years ago. Vivante has replaced the old JB Rivers in Cavendish and here’s a fun fact – we met and fell in love waiting tables, drinking danger passions and making memories in this very spot. It was so good to return and experience something new.
Vivante in Cavendish is all about “Living Life Well”. They serve up an impressive variety of dishes including everything from all-day breakfasts and cakes to sushi, salads, flatbreads, burgers, AND tapas – which were delicious! There is a little something for every tastebud and occasion and we couldn’t wait to get stuck in. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable – perfect for breakfast, lunch, cake or dinner. Service is fantastic, everyone we met was knowledgeable, vibey and added to the overall feel of the restaurant.
To start, we ordered tapas. The beef bitterballen (R44) and chicken wrapped in bacon (R48). Firstly, the portions were super generous. Secondly, the flavours were bang-on the money. Thirdly, YUM! I could eat it all again right now. The bitterballen were soft and moreish on the inside and perfectly crisp on the outside, and the bacon wrapped chicken was sweet, sticky and tender.
Next up, we tried a portion of Yuppie Rolls (R88 for 8 pieces) and the Slow Roasted Pork Belly (R98). The sushi was fresh, colourful and packed with salmon, cream cheese and avo. The pork belly was a crispy and piled on to a bed of mash and veggies with a soy broth. I would have liked the pork to have been a little more tender with loads more broth – I love my sauce. Both dishes were beautifully presented and the flavours were definitely there.
Next time you’re in Cavendish, make a plan to pop in. For a caffeine and cake pick me up between shopping, for a glass of wine and tapas before your movie or for a light breakfast, lunch or dinner. I know I’ll be back for my next tapas fix soon. I already know which tapas I’m going to try next – bacon wrapped dates, Spanish meatballs, jalapeno poppers, chicken bitterballen and chocolate churros. Uh-oh… my waistline might be in trouble.
