We spent the most amazing day and night at Lanzerac Wine Estate recently and it was perfect. Situated just 40 minutes away from Cape Town, Lanzerac Wine Estate has everything you need for a relaxing, luxurious and delicious time away. We spent a jam-packed day experiencing everything that the estate has to offer, and we left feeling like we had been away for more than just the one night. We left feeling fully rested, a little heavier (all the wine and food) and a whole lot happier.
Dating back to 1692, Lanzerac Wine Estate is known for their 5 star hotel and it shows in everything that they do. The gardens are absolute perfection with lush green grass and beautiful flowers as far as the eye can see. The rooms are pure luxury at its best. The views are breathtaking and the staff are friendly and genuinely happy to go out of their way to make your stay memorable.
Probably the biggest highlight of our stay was the fact that everything we could want, and then some, was no more than a few steps away. This meant that we could fully unwind and enjoy all the activities on offer without having to leave the estate… and boy did we have fun.
Cellar Tour and Wine Tasting
It’s always a good idea to start the day with wine and that is exactly what we did, starting with the cellar tour and moving on to a wine and chocolate tasting, which were equally fantastic. Walking through the cellar with a glass of bubbly in hand while learning a thing or two along the way is something we love doing and the tour at Lanzerac did not disappoint. The passion and love for the farm and their wine rang true and got us excited to get stuck in. Here’s a fun fact – did you know that Lanzerac produced the world’s first Pinotage!!!
Our wine and chocolate tasting was by far one of the best we have experienced for a number of reasons. Firstly, the tasting room is super relaxed with big comfy chairs that encourage you to settle in for a slow and leisurely tasting. Secondly, the wine and chocolates really do compliment each other perfectly. We were told that this is something that they take quite seriously, and it is a continuous process of tasting and pairing to ensure the tastes and flavours match as the wines change over the years. And lastly, the servings are decent – you get a good splash of each wine to properly taste and enjoy.
If you enjoy Chardonnay, you really need to spoil yourself with a bottle of the Mrs English Chardonnay. It is sublime.
Lunch at the Deli
After our tasting, we visited the deli for lunch. The Deli at Lanzerac is all about fresh, light and delicious bites. Think freshly baked breads, cakes and pasties, home-made jams, chutneys and platters of cheese, cold meats and pickles. We ordered a ploughman’s board and a bottle of Chardonnay and spent a lazy afternoon eating and drinking in the sunshine. Bliss!
Pamper time at the Spa
Who doesn’t love a bit of pamper time. After a very wine-heavy lunch, I walked over to the Spa for some me-time. The first thing I noticed as I walked into the Spa, was the view. It is an incredibly calm space with floor to ceiling windows looking out onto the Stellenbosch mountain range.
Our room at Lanzerac Wine Estate
After a long day of eating and drinking and laughing, we headed over to our room and WOW, hands down one of the most beautiful rooms we have had the pleasure of staying in. We stayed in one of the newly renovated rooms and I can tell you that no stone was left unturned. A king size bed with soft white linen, under floor heating, a private patio, and the most magical bathroom we have ever come across with a beautiful stand alone bath tub looking out onto the estates garden – with matching bathrobes. The room also included all the other cool stuff like our own nespresso machine, sweet treats, charlotte rhys bath goodies, dstv, air-con, mini-bar, etc.
Much later, we decided to freshen up and head out for dinner. We started with a visit to the bar where we sipped on G&T’s and munched on bar snacks while chatting to the friendly bar staff. We were amazed to learn that some of them have been with Lanzerac for 40+ years. Full up on bar snacks, we decided to retire back to our stunning room for a night of room service and chill time.
The next morning we sat down to a giant fry-up in the Governors Hall. We had such an amazing time at Lanzerac Wine Estate and we were honestly quite sad to leave. It was an all in one experience that we would be happy to do a lot more of. It is 5 stars at its very best and we are counting down the days until our next visit. The lop has already started saving!

Side note: The estate is busy undergoing a huge revamp. They were busy with the last of the room renovations when we visited and the next phase is to re-do the spa. I can’t imagine it getting much prettier than it already is so I’m excited to see the end result.
