We spent the most glorious few days at Gelukkie in Paternoster recently and we loved every single thing about our visit. Gelukkie, as the owners describe it, is not just a place, but an experience, and this couldn’t ring truer. The farm oozes beauty, happiness and comfort and is situated a hop, skip and a jump away from the Paternoster fishing village and beach. It was our first visit to Paternoster (I know!!!) and we actually cannot wait to go back – the people are charming, the way of life is super chilled and we can totally see why the Gelukkie family chose it to be their home so many years ago.
We arrived at Gelukkie on Friday evening and were welcomed and shown to our cottage by Andrew – who I’m sure never tires from all the oohs and aahs that happen when new guests enter their little piece of heaven for the first time. From the moment we walked in through the front door, we were blown away by the attention to detail, pure beauty and comfort throughout the cottage. To say that we were happy to be able to settle in for the night, in front of the warm and toasty fireplace, with red wine and snacks is an understatement. It was exactly what we needed and it went down an absolute treat.
We stayed in Klein Gelukkie which is a fully equipped self catering cottage and has everything you need (and then some) to make your stay a good one. The cottage is beautifully designed and decorated with art and wood pieces throughout (made by the incredibly talented owners, Ruth and Andrew) and truly adds to the overall experience. The cottage is spacious and the layout flows effortlessly from one area to the next.
The bedroom included a king size bed with soft, fluffy linen, an electric blanket (winner) fresh flowers, a dressing table, cupboard and a tv (that included only a few dvd options – making sure guests took the opportunity to unwind and not fall into TV watching habits). The chandelier hanging in the bedroom is one of the many pieces of handmade art you will come across when you visit Gelukkie.
The bathroom and the chill out reading room were just off the bedroom and I must say, I was really quite fond of the reading room. Such a lovely idea and the most perfect spot to escape the day for a bit of me-time. I can imagine it being the best room in the house during the summer months and can see many, many hours spent lazing around with a good book, a glass of wine and the sun-rays shining in.
The kitchen and lounge area are open plan and have a warm and homely feel. We spent almost the whole weekend snuggled up on the couch, eating, drinking and chatting in front of the indoor fireplace and it was pure bliss. Being able to cut off from the world and enjoy the little things in life is a real treat. We all need to do it every now and then… and Gelukkie is the perfect place to do it. Not only is it peaceful and relaxed but the cottage includes everything you need to be able to switch off and reboot.
The summer days and nights can be enjoyed outdoors in the comfort of your own private garden and braai area where you can take it all in – nothing but crisp Paternoster air and beautiful nature surrounding you.
A big thank you to Andrew, Ruth and Cindy for welcoming us into your home and making us take the time-out we needed. Catching up around the fireplace on Saturday evening was a treat. Your passion and hospitality shine bright and we cannot wait to visit again.
