There is a hot new Asian and sushi restaurant in Cape Town that seriously ticks all the boxes when it comes to amazing flavours. Ben Wei Sushi opened its doors in Wembley Square in Gardens recently and if our dinner experience is anything to go by, it is going to become a firm favourite for many hungry Capetonians.

Firstly, the space is lovely with beautiful pops of green and blue throughout. We visited on a relatively quiet night (I doubt that will be the case for much longer) and loved that it was still such a vibe. Soft lighting paired with catchy music created a romantic and fun atmosphere. The service is excellent and deserves a mention. It is always great when you are able to chat and laugh with the team while still keeping a “date-night” feel to the evening.

Ben Wei Sushi is all about creating quality food that is packed with flavour. They use only the freshest ingredients and add their own unique spin to classic dishes to keeps things exciting. We really love experiencing new dishes so we were in our element. The menu offers a good mix of Asian, Sushi and Fusion dishes with a little something for every taste bud. Think starters such as tempura prawn, chicken satay, soups and salads. Mains include Thai curries, stir-fry’s and all the sushi you can think of, including banting and vegetarian options. And desserts such as deep fried banana and ice cream, Irish coffees and dom pedros.

So many choices… we were so grateful when Bryn (Ben Wei’s hilarious superstar manager) took the decision-making process out of our hands for the evening otherwise we would have had a tough time narrowing things down. All we had to do was sit back and enjoy dish after dish of food, glorious food.

To start, we tried the peanut chicken satay (R45) and the Prawn and cheese springrolls (R28). The chicken satay was tender with a dreamy lick-the-bowl-clean peanut sauce and the springrolls were light and crispy.

Next up, a beautiful selection of sushi that included: Jimmylicious (R60), Tuna sashimi (R47), banting roses (R50), spicy prawn bean curd nigiri (R52) and cucumber maki (R26). Wowzers, everything was good but the jimmylicious stole the show. It was the best sushi we have ever tasted – prawn and cream cheese sandwich topped with crispy prawn and tangy mayo. The flavours and textures blew our minds. And the banting roses were as pretty to look at as they were to eat. Such a clever and healthy spin on the classic salmon rose.

Next up, the spicy beef and veggies (R79) with steamed rice (R22) and noodles (R29). We tried very hard to get the secret recipe out of Chef Jim Dai because it was an absolute flavour explosion. The beef (they use rump to maximize flavour) was tender, the veggies were crunchy and the sauce was a mix of spicy sweetness that we just could not get enough of. Mixed with noodles or rice and washed down with an ice-cold beer or glass of wine – we were in foodie heaven.

To end, we shared the deep-fried banana with ice cream and chocolate sauce (R48). It doesn’t get much better than this to be honest. Well worth the calories.
