We recently headed out to Franschhoek to spend A Day at Anthonij Rupert Wine Estate and we couldn’t have asked for a better day. It was a beautiful sunny winter’s day and we enjoyed an afternoon full of good wine, delicious food, gorgeous views, lots of laughs and the most impressive car collection we have ever seen.

Anthonij Rupert and L’Ormarins Estates have introduced their new “all in one” package which includes activities at each of the hot-spots across the grounds. There is a little something for everyone’s taste and it really is such a great idea for a group of friends and family that are looking for a fun outing.

We arrived just before lunch time and went straight to Terra del Capo where we were to check in and plan our day. We decided to start with wine tasting, move on to cars and then end with lunch and some more wine tasting. We were ready and excited to explore… but not before a hot cappuccino and a browse around the tasting room and restaurant.

Getting around the 2 estates is such a pleasure. Two specially built trams travel between the venues collecting and dropping visitors off at each of the facilities. They run in tandem and take about 30 minutes per journey so you never have to wait too long before your next stop. Not much beats a little drive through the vineyards with views over the Franschhoek Wine Valley and Groot Drakenstein Mountains = breathtaking. It was such a unique and memorable experience and one that we were lucky enough to enjoy all through the afternoon.

A day at Anthonij Rupert Wine EstateAnd we’re off

Our first stop was to enjoy a premium wine tasting at The Anthonij Rupert Tasting Room which is located in the historic and recently refurbished Manor House. As we stepped inside, we were handed a glass of L’Ormarins Brut Rose and encouraged to go for a walk-about (our kind of welcome) while they set up for our tasting. As we walked from room to room we were taken back in time and given the chance to appreciate the elegant Cape Dutch style with antique furniture and art throughout. It was the perfect way to work up our wine-ppetite.

Our premium wine tasting included 4 wines (plus some special additions). We decided it was best to go with a tasting that was recommended to us and that required nothing more than us sitting back and enjoying while looking out onto the never-ending views of the Franschhoek Wine Valley.

There is something to be said about a wine tasting that starts off on a high note and ends off on an ever higher note. It’s not often that we can say this but each wine we sipped tasted better and better as we continued (yes, this is the wine speaking… but for the right reasons). Starting with the Altima Sauvignon Blanc which was crisp, light and easy drinking, then the Serruria Chardonnay which was a little bolder with fuller flavours, moving on to the Optima which was spicy and smooth and ending with the Cabernet Franc which was rich, velvety and perfectly balanced.

Our next stop was the Franschhoek Motor Museum which properly blew our minds. The collection included everything from old vintage cars and carriages to classic pickups and slick sports cars. It was total eye candy and we only saw a tiny portion of the entire collection, which is said to be way over the 200 mark. A visit to the Motor Museum is a must-see and will be enjoyed by just about anyone. It was exciting walking from one building to the next, leading up to the final room which had everyone (girls and boys, young and old) drooling over the collection of sexy sports cars.

Our final stop was lunch and wine tasting at Terra del Capo. We had worked up quite the appetite by the time we arrived and couldn’t wait to tuck into our antipasti style lunch.  The social, sharing way of eating is a big favourite for us and Terra del Capo did not disappoint. A selection of hot and cold anti pastis and platters were brought to our table and we were only too happy to tuck into. Our feast included an assortment of cheese, charcuterie, biscuits and figs, grilled and marinated picked vegetables, fried seafood, beer battered zucchini fries with aioli and the most amazing arancini balls. Everything was fresh, delicious and beautifully presented. We paired this with our second wine tasting of the day and we couldn’t have asked for a better ending.

I cannot recommend that you visit Anthonij Rupert Wine Estate for their all in a day package enough. We had a really lovely time and the cost of R340 per person is a steal when you look at everything that’s included.

My only tip is that you plan your day and think about how much time you want to spend at each venue. If we were to do it again, we would head to the Motor Museum first and then spend the rest of our day wine tasting and eating… but that’s just us (and where our priorities are at).

The entire team were friendly, helpful and always smiling. The weather played along and the views delivered. What a treat of a day!
